Specialists in 4×4 and off-road tyres

Horndean Tyres offer a wide range of 4×4 tyres and off-road tyres designed for the vehicle you drive and the terrain you spend the most time on.

There are three types of 4×4 and off-road tyres that are optimised for:

90% road to 10% off-road
For use primarily on road with occasional off-road ability

All terrain tyres 50% road to 50% off-road
For better off-road grip with a chunkier tread pattern

Mud terrain tyres 20% road to 80% off-road
For vehicles spending most of their time off-road

We recommend fitting four tyres of the same brand and tread pattern to your vehicle.

Van and light commercial vehicles tyres at Horndean Tyres

Tyres for vans and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) up to 3,500 kilograms in weight naturally work hard for a living. Every day, they cover more miles and carry more weight than a standard car tyre. Operating across tougher environments too, from multi-drop deliveries to working on construction sites.

Horndean Tyres can recommend the best van tyres to keep your vehicles working hard whilst providing the lowest operating cost for your business. We understand that as a van driver, a fleet manager, or a business owner, you have a duty of care that your commercial tyres are always roadworthy and legal.

Safe puncture repair service at Horndean Tyres

The first indication of a tyre puncture is often a warning light on the dashboard of your car. Our tyre technicians will skilfully check and assess if the puncture can safely be repaired in accordance with British Standard AU 159. This ensures the puncture repair is fully compliant and will last for the lifetime of the tyre.

Run flat tyres

The sidewalls on run flat tyres are reinforced so they can be driven on for a short time after getting a puncture. Tyre manufacturers specify that this reinforcement makes it impossible to detect if the tyre structure has been compromised so the only safe option is to replace them.

Wheel alignment service at Horndean Tyres

There are several tell-tale signs you will notice if your car needs wheel alignment:

  • it pulls to one side when driving
  • uneven tyre wear across the tread pattern
  • a noisy rubbing sound when you turn corners

You may even notice that your fuel consumption has increased.

If you experience any of these issues, contact Horndean Tyres to correct your misaligned wheels using our state-of-the-art laser calibrated equipment:

Front wheel alignment

Your steering wheels are the most likely to become misaligned, as they steer the car and are most likely to hit potholes and nudge against kerbs.

Four-wheel alignment

With this service our highly trained technicians will perform a more in-depth assessment that includes the rear wheels.

Our highly trained technicians will talk through the requirements of your car and then correct the wheel alignment in accordance with the manufacturers detailed specifications whatever the make of car.

Having the correct wheel alignment will improve vehicle handling and steering whilst also reducing braking distances. Aside from optimising the safety of your car, it will also lower your fuel consumption and extend the service life of your tyres.

Wheel balancing at Horndean Tyres

At Horndean Tyres we always perform a wheel balance when we fit new tyres.

Our computerised wheel balancing machines precisely identify where to add the tiny counter balancing weights around the wheel. This ensures that the combined weight of the wheel and tyre is as even as possible, ensuring that it runs smoothly at speed.

Occasionally, wheels can lose these weights due to poor road conditions, including potholes or if you clip a kerb. If this happens you may notice vibration in your steering wheel, or tyre ‘wobble’ at certain speeds. Some tyres when they wear can also become unbalanced. If this happens, you should get your wheels and tyres rebalanced to maintain safety and comfort.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) services

TPMS has been a legal requirement for all new passenger vehicles sold in the UK since 2012. The TPMS sensors are designed to last for many years but when the internal battery runs out a replacement is needed. Occasionally, sensors can also become faulty or fail because of damage or corrosion.

Horndean Tyres can fit replacement OEM and aftermarket TPMS sensors to your wheels when this happens. Our tyre technicians are fully trained to program the new sensors to communicate with the vehicle’s ECU using our specialist diagnostic equipment.

TPMS checks are now part of your cars annual MOT test. Your car can receive an instant MOT failure if the TPMS dashboard light stays on – indicating a fault or problem with the TPMS system.

Check your tyre pressures for safety!

All tyres naturally lose around 2 psi or 0.1 BAR of pressure per month, especially during warmer weather. Tyres should be checked when they are cold using a calibrated air pressure gauge at a petrol filling station or with a quality portable tyre pump. The vehicle manufacturer will normally specify the recommended tyre pressure on a sticker visible inside one of the front doors and in the handbook.

Keeping your tyres at the correct pressure will:

  • optimise vehicle safety and handling
  • reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions
  • save you money by maximising tyre life

It is recommended that you check your tyre pressures every two weeks and before any long journey. Your tyres will also need a higher pressure if you’re going to carry extra weight in your vehicle.

Tyre Tread Depth and UK Law

It’s easy to check if your tyre tread depth complies with UK law. Just insert a 20p coin into the tread grooves of your tyres and providing the outer edge remains hidden the tyre is above the legal tread limit.

All tyres are manufactured with tread wear indicators – small bars that span the base of the tread grooves. Once the surface of these bars are level with the tread you’re down to the legal minimum. The legal limit for the minimum tread depth is 1.6 millimetres around the circumference and across the central ¾ of the tyre.

Other defects, such as lumps, bumps and bulges that indicate the tyre has structural damage – or – any cuts or tears bigger than 25mm or exposed tyre ply or cords, mean you should also replace your tyres.

Let us help you keep safe – pop into our retail drive-in service centre and let our experienced technicians check your tyres for free.

End of life tyre disposal

When we fit new tyres to your car, 4×4 or van we responsibly recycle the old tyres. Around 95% of every tyre can be recycled with the rubber reused in sport surfaces and soft playground flooring, road construction, roofing products, industrial sealants as well as tyre-derived fuels.
